James Ndiritu Gachihi became a coffee farmer in his father's footsteps in his early twenties. He has around 8000 trees, mainly SL28 & SL34 but also some Ruiru and Batian varieties. James is highly focused on the quality of his coffee and has ambitious plans for the future to grow the production. And maybe in the future work together with his daughter who is showing a lot of interest in the profession.
We met James and the other 6 farmers from their coffee producers group called Mecop when we visited Kenya in early 2020 with our friends from Belco Coffee. The aim of our trip was to source Kenyan coffees with full traceability down to the exact farm they come from. Thanks to the game-changing Mecop (started by David Maguta) we were able to return home very happy for finding this new partnership.
The group works a lot differently than a traditional Kenyan coop. As there are significantly fewer farmers with bigger lots, they are all able to negotiate their own terms and farmgate prices. The group gets 100% of the paid FOB and then pay together for the milling, exporting fees, different documents, and licenses.
Please keep in mind that our roast day is Monday. All orders received before Monday 10.00 will be shipped at the latest on Wednesday.
