Honduras - Dolmin Moreno


Taste notes of marzipan, green apple, Nutella come together with some floral notes and cola flavors in this wonderful presentation of Honduran Pacas by Dolmin Moreno. This coffee works beautifully with all brewing methods but is roasted especially with a balanced and sweet espresso in mind.

We recommend this coffee for espresso, Moka pot, French press, AeroPress, pour-over, batch brew.

Dolmin Moreno is a member of the famous Moreno family from El Cedral in the Santa Barbara region of Honduras.  His coffees grow next to his father, uncles, and cousins on the steep slopes only accessible by foot or mule. The blazing sun, strong winds, and cold nights don't make the farming tasks any easier but they do help in developing incredibly complex flavor notes and clarity in the cup.

Dolmin's family, the Morenos are known throughout the region for their significant role in changing the direction in this traditional coffee farming area into specialty coffee. The Morenos played also a big part on Populus Coffee's path to specialty coffee roasters and therefore the whole clan and the area itself will always have a special place in our hearts.

We met Dolmin and his family the first time in 2014 when traveling to Honduras with a book project with the Collaborative Coffee Source to record their path to specialty coffee producers. Years ago, when Dolmin was a teenager and his grandfather was a coffee farmer in the same hills the whole family nowadays lives, Dolmin's father, Miquel, was visiting his parents from the United States when they heard their neighbor had won some coffee related competition. As the neighbor couldn't make it to the ceremony, Miquel was asked to do this on his behalf. As it turned out the competition was The Cup of Excellence, a highly valued competition in the specialty coffee industry.  As Miquel was accepting this award he was mistaken for their neighbor and approached by green coffee buyers. He quickly learned the price differences between commodity coffees and specialty coffees. Very soon he had talked his father and some brothers into investing in turning their family's coffee production to specialty coffee. This turned out not to be only a great decision for their family but to the surrounding community as well.

We are extremely happy to be continuing our partnership with the Moreno family and building our relationship even stronger in the years to come.
