The Producer:
Boyce Harries is a fifth-generation coffee producer following in the footsteps of his Sout-African and New Zealand ancestors in caring for the family's two farms, Oreti and Chania. Boyce's family moved to the area in 1904 and started cultivating many products, including coffee. After establishing the two farms, Boyce's great-grandfather founded a business, A.I.R Harries and Son Ltd, that also acts as the exporting company for all coffee from the estates.
The farms employ approximately 40 people year-round, of which several are families in their second or third generation, and most employees live permanently on the farms. As all coffees are hand-picked, the farms see as many as 300 people participating in daily work during labor-intensive harvest times. All pickers live locally, and many are part of extended families of permanent employees. A self-elected workers committee meets monthly to raise and discuss social, welfare, safety, and health matters. On Chania estate, the employees have a Social Hall for communal evening activities that double as a nursery school during the day as the parents are at work.
