Costa Rica - Roger Ureña

A very special and limited release by the  CoE winner Roger Ureña from Tarrazú, Costa Rica.  Red honey processed Typica Mejorado with Lychee-like floral notes, soft citruses reminiscing lemongrass, and sweet-sour juicy star fruit combine in a silky cup with lingering syrupy sweetness.

Filter coffee:

Lychee, lemongrass, raspberry jam, and starfruit combine in a silky cup with lingering, syrupy sweetness.

The Producer:

We met Roger Ureña on our trip to Costa Rica in 2024 after his Cup of Excellence double-win. Don Roger is no stranger on the CoE winners list, placing consistently in the top 10 for years.

His coffee career started young, working alongside his parents and grandparents. After school, he left for the US to work and make money to invest towards his farm in Costa Rica. In 2015, he opened his own Micromill Santa Teresa 2000, which is one of the highest elevated mills in Costa Rica.

Roger didn't want to grow all the same coffees as everyone else in the area. He wanted his cup profile to be different and decided to plant more exotic ones, such as Typica Mejorado, Gesha, Sudan Rume, Pacamara, Villalobos, and San Roque.

Recent studies show that despite its name, Typica Mejorado has no relation to Typica but is instead a cross between the Bourbon variety and Ethiopian landrace. It’s likely to have been given this name as its sensory profile resembles Typica but often has more complex and expressive flavour notes.
